Well shit.
I am so fucked.
Ok, I may not be that fucked, but still.
I took a full time job with my college in April, starting an online tutoring program for them. Finding a good platform, creating content, hiring and training tutors and so forth.
I initially turned down the job. I was asked to take it and just get things up and running, so I signed a 14 month contract. No problem. And hiring season is over for people like me. Faculty types.
Then things got all fuckered up. The budget crunch came in. The legislature voted my college a shortfall of several million dollars. They also froze tuition rates.
In response, there was a budget sweep. Every department lost money. One of the higher ups transferred my salary to my department, waited for the sweep to be over, then took the money back. And now my job is no longer funded. I bet this wasn’t so much of a “gotcha” as an opportunity not to be missed.
All other feelings and gyrations aside, I’m sorta fucked until next year. Because hiring season is OVER for this year. The English department said they would be happy to have me full time temporary for a year. And tomorrow I’ll probably have another job offer on campus. I have a Ph.D. I’ll be ok. But I’m still pissed as all get out. And I had to cancel my trip “home” to Oklahomaland for a visit.
In all seriousness, this is like the 4th time something like this has happened. I’m starting to think this university doesn’t like me.
